10. Crucifixion & Burial
Simon Carries Jesus’ Cross

MT 27:32As they were coming out, they found a man of Cyrene named Simon, whom they pressed into service to bear His cross.

MK 15:21They pressed into service a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and Rufus), to bear His cross.

LK 23:26When they led Him away, they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene, coming in from the country, and placed on him the cross to carry behind Jesus.

Jesus’ Words to the Women

LK 23:27And following Him was a large crowd of the people, and of women who were mourning and lamenting Him. 28But Jesus turning to them said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, stop weeping for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.’ 30Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘cover us.’ 31For if they do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

The Two Criminals Led Out With Jesus

LK 23:32Two others also, who were criminals, were being led away to be put to death with Him.

Led Out to Golgotha

MT 27:33And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull,

MK 15:22Then they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.

LK 23:33aWhen they came to the place called The Skull,..

JN 19:17They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha.

Jesus Refuses to Drink

MT 27:34They gave Him wine to drink mixed with gall; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink.

MK 15:23They tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it.

Jesus’ Garments Divided Among the Soldiers

MT 27:35And when they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments among themselves by casting lots. 36And sitting down, they began to keep watch over Him there.

MK 15:24And they crucified Him, and divided up His garments among themselves, casting lots for them to decide what each man should take.

LK 23:33b...there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. 34But Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.

JN 19:23Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece. 24So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be”; this was to fulfill the Scripture: “They divided My outer garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.” 25aTherefore the soldiers did these things.

The Crucifixion

MT 27:38At that time two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left.

MK 15:27They crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left. 28And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with transgressors.”

JN 19:18There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between.

Pilates’ Inscription

MT 27:37And above His head they put up the charge against Him which read, “THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

MK 15:26The inscription of the charge against Him read, “THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

LK 23:38Now there was also an inscription above Him, “THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

JN 19:19Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, “JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

20Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin and in Greek.

21So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews’; but that He said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’”

22Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”

The Derision of the People

MT 27:39And those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads 40and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”

MK 15:29Those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads, and saying, “Ha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30save Yourself, and come down from the cross!”

LK 23:35And the people stood by, looking on. And even the rulers were sneering at Him, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is the Christ of God, His Chosen One.”

The Derision of the Priests & Leaders

MT 27:41In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, 42“He saved others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43“He trusts in God; let God rescue Him now, if He delights in Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”

MK 15:31In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, “He saved others; He cannot save Himself. 32aLet this Christ, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!”

The Derision of the Soldiers

LK 23:36The soldiers also mocked Him, coming up to Him, offering Him sour wine, 37and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!”

JN 19:25aTherefore the soldiers did these things.

The Two Criminals

MT 27:44The robbers who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him with the same words.

MK 15:32bThose who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.

LK 23:39One of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!”

40But the other answered, and rebuking him said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.”

42And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!

43And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.”

Jesus’ Words to Mary and John

JN 19:25bBut standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”

27Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!”

From that hour the disciple took her into his own household.

Darkness from the Sixth to Ninth Hours

MT 27:45Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour.

MK 15:33When the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour.

LK 23:44It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour, 45abecause the sun was obscured;

Jesus Cries Out at the Ninth Hour

MT 27:46About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have Tou forsaken Me?”

47And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, began saying, “This man is calling for Elijah.”

48Immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. 49But the rest of them said, “Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him.”

MK 15:34At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?

35When some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, “Behold, He is calling for Elijah.”

36Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down.”

Jesus Drinks the Sour Wine

JN 19:28After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty.”

29A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. 30aTherefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!”

Jesus’ Death

MT 27:50And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.

MK 15:37And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last.

LK 23:46And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into Your hands I commit my spirit.” Having said this, He breathed His last.

JN 19:30bAnd He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

Events Upon Jesus’ Death

MT 27:51And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split. 52The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many.

MK 15:38And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

LK 23:45band the veil of the temple was torn in two.

The Witness of the Centurion

MT 27:54Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”

MK 15:39When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”

LK 23:47Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began praising God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent.”

The Reaction of the Crowd

LK 23:48And all the crowds who came together for this spectacle, when they observed what had happened, began to return, beating their breasts.

Jesus’ Side Pierced

JN 19:31Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him; 33but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.

35And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. 36For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, “Not a bone of Him shall be broken.” 37And again another Scripture says, “They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”

Those Who Were Present

MT 27:55Many women were there looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee while ministering to Him. 56Among them was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

MK 15:40There were also some women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the Less and Joses, and Salome. 41When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and minister to Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

LK 23:49And all His acquaintances and the women who accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, seeing these things.

Jesus’ Burial

MT 27:57When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away.

MK 15:42When evening had already come, because it was the preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43Joseph of Arimathea came, a prominent member of the Council, who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God; and he gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.

44Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead. 45And ascertaining this from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

46Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.

LK 23:50And a man named Joseph, who was a member of the Council, a good and righteous man 51(he had not consented to their plan and action), a man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was waiting for the kingdom of God; 52this man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53And he took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever lain.

54It was the preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.

JN 19:38After these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body.

39Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight. 40So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.

41Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42Therefore because of the Jewish day of preparation, since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

The Preparations of the Women

MT 27:61And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the grave.

MK 15:47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were looking on to see where He was laid.

LK 23:55Now the women who had come with Him out of Galilee followed, and saw the tomb and how His body was laid. 56Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes.

And on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

The Guard Placed on the Tomb

MT 27:62Now on the next day, the day after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate, 63and said, “Sir, we remember that when He was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I am to rise again.’ 64Therefore, give orders for the grave to be made secure until the third day, otherwise His disciples may come and steal Him away and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.”

65Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go, make it as secure as you know how.”

66And they went and made the grave secure, and along with the guard they set a seal on the stone.
